We Saw the Future

CES 2024 vividly showcased a future shaped by AI, clean technology, and innovative updates in areas like automotive and home. This event went beyond just offering a sneak peek at the future; it served as a clarion call for action. Embracing the theme "AI for All," it stressed the importance of ethical and inclusive technology development, with a strong focus on comprehensive data management. The event highlighted the critical need for technological advancements to be accessible and beneficial to everyone, not merely a privileged few. As we step into this AI-driven era, it's vital to harness its potential while diligently addressing its challenges. This approach is key to transforming our world into a place that is not just more intelligent, but also more equitable and sustainable for everyone.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) was the undeniable highlight, eclipsing Web3's presence last year. The event, celebrating its 100th year, was a grand affair with over 4,000 exhibitors and an attendance exceeding 130,000, solidifying its status as the largest global electronics exhibition. The overarching theme, "AI for All," was more than a mere slogan—it was a vivid, hands-on experience evident in every aspect of the show, from dynamic presentations to interactive exhibits and even in the technology integrated into car dashboards. This year, AI moved beyond theoretical concepts and algorithms, becoming a tangible, interactive presence that could be seen, touched, heard, and conversed with. AI’s applications extended far beyond traditional confines of laptops and smartphones, permeating our environment in a manner that could well be termed the AI of Things (AIOT). Beyond the eye-catching innovations, the event also highlighted critical converging trends in the technology landscape.

Generative AI: The capabilities of ChatGPT have transcended beyond just captivating online audiences. Now, it's a vital component in the physical realm, flawlessly incorporated into vehicle infotainment setups, and becoming an integral part of homes, workplaces, and various industries.

Immersive AI: At CES, a new era of AI-driven experiences was unveiled, featuring innovative AI-powered environments, transparent TV screens, and extraordinary XR (Extended Reality) experiences. These advancements are designed for home, work, and industrial use, effectively diminishing the boundaries between the real and virtual worlds.

Robots: I think robots would have been on the floor regardless of AI, so let’s forgo them.

Future Living with AI Integration: The concept of Smart Homes and the Internet of Things (IoT) has been established for some time. The real innovation now lies in integrating AI to leverage data in transformative ways. Picture a living room wall that transforms into a custom newsfeed, an educational tutor, or a wellness advisor, or a mirror that serves as your personal fitness coach. Leading companies like Samsung and Kohler are embedding AI into home environments through smart appliances, furniture that monitors health, and even innovative showerheads that generate water. While these advancements are exciting, they also bring a deluge of data into our hyper-connected lives, highlighting the critical need for robust privacy and data protection protocols.

Automotive Evolution: The Era of the Car as a Digital Hub: Elon Musk was on point when he described cars as computers on wheels. AI is revolutionizing the customer journey in the automotive industry, enhancing every aspect from online browsing to dealership experiences, customer service interactions, and even the financial aspects of purchasing, renting, or subscribing to vehicles.

CES has emerged as the most significant automotive showcase globally. While the absence of major North American auto manufacturers was noted, Asian brands such as Hyundai, Kia, and VinFast captivated attendees. Chinese carmakers, though not officially present in the U.S. market, subtly made their presence known through various technology and software exhibits.

VinFast from Vietnam made a striking impression with its array of products, including passenger vehicles, e-bikes, and the new "Wild" utility truck, combining elements of Rivian's style and innovative design concepts.

Software-Driven Automotive Experience: Echoing the innovative path set by Tesla, companies like BMW and Mercedes-Benz displayed their visions for software-centric vehicles. These vehicles are enhanced through over-the-air updates, improving everything from driving dynamics to toll payments, parking, and charging. Anticipate a connected ecosystem where your vehicle not only adapts to your driving patterns and needs but also communicates seamlessly with your home and workplace. This integration extends to various services like subscriptions, charging, and insurance. While functions like ChatGPT and CoPilot are accessible via smartphones, their integration directly into vehicle interfaces is a groundbreaking development. Car manufacturers are opening up their systems to a wider range of applications, moving away from the dominance of Apple and Android ecosystems and creating more diverse app markets.

Amazon's Growing Influence in Transportation and Mobility: At CES, Amazon made a significant impact by expanding its reach into the transportation and mobility sectors, effectively diminishing the distinction between technology companies and traditional automotive and delivery service providers. Amazon's substantial presence at the show was not just about showcasing products but also clearly demonstrating its strategy to encompass the entire car purchase customer journey. This approach signifies Amazon's ambition to integrate technology and customer experience seamlessly, from vehicle selection to purchase and delivery. And forcing out the little guys, by the way.
