Who is in the Driver’s Seat?
When it comes to generative AI, many people have become empowered in ways maybe they should not have been. As the Hollywood creative community wakes up to the possibilities, they can still be in charge of their futures and the future of film. I call it Creative Centered AI (CCAI). You need that creative person, not just a human. You need the editor that has 20 years experience of storytelling and working the hard way to understand how these tools can actually be used. They are the ones who have the actual expertise to push the format to new levels. It isn't going to be a newbie hack novice that proclaims, “Hey, look, I'm editing. Ma! I made an AI movie. Look at me.” But what is it? It's like a two minute dream sequence. It's not a movie. There's no talent in it. There's robots maybe. And there's some explosions. And so, it's really not an AI “film.” It's less about making an AI film, but rather giving filmmakers and editors these tools to help with films. They are still in the driver’s seat and all this hack filmmaker nonsense will go away. It is just using AI tools within these accepted platforms that we were already using like Adobe and Avid and just making your film. Helping you. But it's not an AI film at the end of the day. In the past you would not have said I just made an “Avid Film,” or an “Adobe Premiere Film.” You made a film with all the available tools at the time. Same today.
“You've got to have the talent in the first place to know how to use these tools to create magic. And you know, I use Garage Band, but that does not make me a musician and having an AI tool in an editing suite is not going to make everybody an editor. It may make some people slightly better enough that they can get a YouTube video out, but they’re never going to walk into Hollywood and take anyone's job.” – Mark Turner, Creative Technologist
“Will robots take my job? AI is the death of the workforce! And really what I like to say is robots will not take your job. They're only ushering in new jobs. AI gives you the ability to go from ordinary to extraordinary. And the new workforce must be extraordinary.” - Futurist Mike Johns
At the end of the day, the creative community in Hollywood is still in charge of their future. Studios will enjoy the cost savings that GenAI will provide and great films will still be made by famous directors. It will be interesting to see how the independent film community will level up their game with these tools.
